A Meek and Quiet Spirit

I read Homeschooling with a Meek and Quiet Spirit years ago when I started homeschooling, and it was such a blessing to me. I finally got my own copy, and it has blessed me all over again!

I want to share first the wisdom she has shared that applies to all mothers, not just those who homeschooling.

"The first step in having a meek and quiet spirit is having a commitment from my heart to begin my day by getting up early to spend time with the Lord."  "We think we need those few extra minutes of sleep to help us get through our day, but our need is not for sleep. Our need is for the empowering that comes through intimacy with the One who called us to the task of homeschooling." "Read your Bible every day. Devotionals are easy to read, but be in the Word for yourself, at least a chapters worth. Dig out and find your own applications."

Before we can have a meek and quiet spirit, we must have a personal relationship with Christ.  Being saved is not just attending church, or believing in God. "Salvation requires repentance and LIFE CHANGING faith in Jesus' death, and resurrection. Salvation means making Jesus the RULER of my life."

"If I make the choice to take my thoughts captive, busyness becomes a vehicle to greater resting in the Lord. I can remind myself that the Lord has not called me to do more than there is time for. He desires the fruit of the Spirit in my life, not fear, worry, frustration or irritation. I can pray when fear or worries attack, asking the Lord for direction on how to use my time and which activities should have highest priority. " " I can view myself as following the Lord's orders, then I dont have to carry the responsibility of the outcome" {of what didn't get done}.

"My children are very aware of my reactions to what is going on around me. Do they see me push to get things done while wronging those I love with my attitude? Or see me walk through times of stress with a meek and quiet spirit?"

" We can undo hours of positive training in seconds when our anger in unleashed".

"Prayer is a mighty weapon to use as we battle fear, worry and insecurity. Rather than giving in to these emotions, lets learn to turn each fear and worry into a request given to God."

"I am the one holding the keys to the atmosphere in our home. When I make a concerted effort to smile, everyone in the family seems to put on a smile as well. A smile conveys love, acceptance, warmth and understanding. It is almost always appropriate within a family. It would be good if we could have little mirrors on our children's foreheads so that we could see how we look as we are teaching them, disciplining, playing with the, or talking to them. Is my countenance pleasant or harsh? Interested or bored? Do they see joy or disappointment?

And if you struggle with depression, you can find most of what is written in her chapter about depression here
