I bought 2 incomplete sets at the thrift store years ago, and they have definitely been worth the money (under $5 total)!
We use them for letter recognition, for learning ABC order:

I spell out easy words for my beginner readers, or encourage them to use the blocks to spell to me. My older reader enjoys playing actual Scrabble with me, building his vocabulary and spelling skills.
I use them to inspire and encourage me, and anyone else who enters my home:
