Parents and Teachers

*All quotes (except scripture) are paraphrased by me :)

So I picked up Spiritual Parenting by C. H. Spurgeon this week, not realizing how much it would help me.

As you may know I teach the preschool class at church, and I truly struggle! The gap between early 3s and late 4s is HUGE, and as much as I long to disciple these children, I feel I spend most of the time trying to get them to listen to me or look at me at all, and not harm each other that I  am sure they walk away with NOTHING I was trying to teach!

This book addressed teaching a classroom full of children in an amazing way (not time fillers, or ways to excite them as the world is so full of these days, but just true meat from the Word of God) as well  as waking up the parent into just how much their child needs salvation NOW as opposed to "when they are old enough to understand".

It is not too early. I can say that 1st hand. Currently my 6 year old and I are reading through Daniel (and we recently read Revelation with the same experience) and it’s my 3rd time reading through it and he is understanding it better the 1st time than I did as an educated adult the 1st 2 times! Even a young child can understand a King James Bible! (We use New King James but he goes back and forth between the 2 easily)

So many people think they must wait until their children are older to teach them the truths of God, and that is just not true!

"The first 7 years of a child’s life are when the clay is the softest. With God’s grace we may defy the world, the flesh and Satan’s chance at ruining that immortal soul"

Parents are called to be a child’s primary teacher on the things of God, not the church. As parents we are called
Deut 6:6 “And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.

"As parents we are called to equip the future generation that the  that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. (2 Timothy 3)"

"Mothers are doing the best possible service to God by putting the godly training of our children and teaching of the Scriptures as the 1st and foremost priority in our lives"

And Moms, this time passes all to quickly. You may have wants for your life, to work, to futher your education, but there will always be time for that, children are young only once and it flies by, don’t be left with regrets! This is God’s calling for us, isn’t what He says more important than what the world expects of us?

"The sooner a child is brought to salvation in the Lord, the less of the world they will have to unlearn. They will be saved from a thousand regrets and not have to carry the burdens on their sins"
Isn’t that what we want more than anything for our children?

I know personally I could care less if my children go to college, or  if they have a great prestigious  career when they grow up. My #1 hope for my children is that they follow hard after the Lord and fulfill His purpose for each of them. I know that people look down on me for that  and think I am crazy and an unwise mother, but I choose not to care.  I saw an email signature once that stuck with me because it is so true to my heart. She wrote "I am training my children for Heaven not Harvard" and truly isn’t that what is more important? God will provide for them and allow them to care for their families if they are following Him, so I have no worries.

The book also notes that by teaching our children obedience from a young age they will be more ready to follow the Lord in obedience, and this also makes your home run so much smoother and makes for much happier children!

(For more on that, I’ll leave yoou to the experts)

First, read Proverbs! It talks so much about discipline from God’s point of view.
